I have heard many testimonials from inhabitants of Pelham bay of feeling right at home when they first move in, even feeling welcomed and loved right from the very beginning. Someone once told me,
Pelham Bay's St. Theresa Feast
This year is the 23rdannual Saint Theresa Feast! Almost everyone in the Bronx knows that this feast indicates the beginning of summer. From June 19th-23rd, come to Saint Theresa’s Church for a Ferris wheel, thrilling rides, a $25,000 raffle prize, a casino, and even a kiddie zone inside Saint Theresa School. Let’s not forget about the amazing Italian food carts either!
Saint Theresa’s Parish has blessed Pelham Bay for over 90 years. In 1925, it was established by Monsignor Bonaventure J. Filitti in the Bronx as an Italian Catholic parish. When it first opened, the streets we know today as Mulford, Mayflower, Pilgrim, and even Hutchinson River Parkway were all farmland. After World War II, the church saw an increase in families and decided that there should be school to help educate their children in Catholicism. Anthony Depace, therefore, designed a school building for the parish which began being built in 1953, and for its staff, the Dominican Sisters from Sparkill, NY, a rectory was built in 1955. Unfortunately, on February 7, 1965, the church lit on fire and was completely destroyed. Plans to re-establish the church began right away and Anthony Depace was called once again to begin its new design. Sunday mass continued in the school’s auditorium but the church itself took 5 years to be completed. Afterward, the NYC council changed the name of the street in front of the church, school, and rectory, from Morris Park Avenue to Saint Theresa Avenue.
The Saint Theresa Parish Feast has been the annual summer street festival since 1996. Saint Theresa’s Parish has a very vast history in itself, and it is also a part of the Bronx’s history. Saint Theresa’s School is also a very popular school in the Pelham Bay area. It has many extracurricular activities, provides a Catholic education, and even hosts events such as The Saint Theresa Annual Dinner Dance, a Mother and Son Bowling Party, Father Daughter Dinner Dance, Easter Bunny Breakfast, and more.
Come to the Saint Theresa Feast this year in Pelham Bay, become a part of this great community and let us know what your favorite ride was!
