There are so many great reasons why you should move to Pelham Bay. Beware, I am not here to convince you. The area can do all the talking for itself. In this blogging series, I am going to be naming some of the reasons why you should pack it up and move to Pelham Bay.

Reason #1: Pelham Bay Park!

Pelham Bay Park is the biggest park in the Bronx. It is actually 3 times larger than Central Park. This park became a property of the Bronx when it was acquired in 1888. It includes Orchard Beach and has hiking trails, a lagoon, the Pelham Split Rock Golf Course, memorial grove, the Bartow-Pell Mansion, an enormous shore line with breathtaking views, as well as so much more.

Some history: This land was first inhabited by Native Americans, primarily founded by Dutch settlers and called New Amsterdam. Anne Hutchinson then settled there but was killed by Native Americans for the unfair treatment they were receiving from the governor, Wilhelm Keift. Afterward, Thomas Pell purchased some of the land from the Siwanoy native people in 1654. Fast forward to the 1800’s, the land was divided and sold into separate estates, and mansions were built by the upper class as their summer vacation spots. To this day, the Bartow Mansion is the only estate that remains and was turned into a museum in 1946. In 1873, a monorail was built through Pelham Bay Park & City Island, but it was later shut down. Naval training even once took place there with 4,777 sailors from 1917-1919.

That was definitely not the complete history of Pelham Bay Park but if you would like to know more please do research! It is an amazing vast park with a lot of great history in its midst. There are always events occurring all around Pelham Bay Park such as family camping, island hopping by canoe, and even an orchard beach lagoon birding excursion. There was even a Bronx Native American Festival. This park is just one of the amazing reasons to move to the Pelham Bay Area. Stay tuned for reason #2!
